Where is Music Therapy Practised?

It can be anywhere you like, really—somewhere you feel comfortable having the session, as long as the venue is appropriate and free from risks or distractions. In the initial sessions, we focus on building rapport, with the goal of helping participants get to know the therapist and for the therapist to learn about the participants and identify their strengths.

To allow this to happen, location is very important, as it significantly influences the vibe of the session, depending on the atmosphere it provides.

So, let’s explore which locations have been used for music therapy.

At Creative Therapy Adelaide, we offer several different room settings to best support participants’ needs:

  • We have a music room equipped with a variety of instruments and equipment, allowing participants to freely explore without risks or restrictions.
  • There’s also a soft room with minimal equipment and furniture to accommodate participants with high sensory needs, while still offering the opportunity to explore instruments and music.
  • We have a recording studio with all the necessary equipment for participants to produce their own music.
  • A consulting room with an electronic piano and minimal hand percussion instruments to help participants focus on specific tasks.
  • A group room for group sessions, mini-concerts, or individual sessions for participants who require a larger space.

These settings encourage participants to avoid distractions, focus on the session, and fully engage.

It’s important for participants to find an environment where they feel safe and comfortable during the session. This can include settings they are familiar with, such as their classroom.

But what about participants who aren’t able to come to the clinic for their sessions for any reason?

Don’t worry! If you can’t come to us, we can bring our equipment and come to you.

The places we’ve visited so far are Home, School, Childcare, Aged Care Facilities, Nursing Homes, Palliative Care, and Rehabilitation Centre.

In visiting sessions, we require parents or representatives to support participants during the session and assist with any needs that the music therapist cannot supervise, such as toileting, providing water, or any assistance related to high physical needs due to the participant’s medical condition.

This ensures the participant’s comfort and safety throughout the session, allowing the therapist to focus fully on delivering music therapy.

By having this support in place, we can provide a more effective and engaging session that caters to the participant’s individual needs without interruptions.

Music is Therapy Practised

Some of the spaces at Creative Therapy Adelaide include a recording studio where participants can express themselves by creating their own music.

What’s in the Music Therapist’s Special Bag?

When sessions are held outside the clinic, the therapist brings a carefully selected set of instruments and equipment, tailored to the participant’s needs.

While space is limited, we do our best to provide suitable and versatile tools to ensure a fulfilling experience.

All the equipment is safe to use for participants of all abilities, offering them the opportunity to explore different instruments and fully engage in the session. This thoughtful selection allows participants to benefit from the therapeutic process, even outside the clinic setting, while still meeting their individual needs.
